Kashmir

EXPLORING THE PARADISE ON EARTH – 9 DAYS IN KASHMIR

Kashmir is truly a paradise nestled in the crown of India. The landscapes in the Kashmir valley even surpass Europe. The snow-capped mountains, serene lakes and lush green valleys, leave you spellbound. Contrary to the popular belief, Kashmir is a safe destination thanks to the strong military presence ensuring peace and security.

What makes Kashmir special is not just the natural wonders but the warmth and hospitality of its people. The locals make you feel at home and are known for their kindness and welcoming nature. And not to forget the mouthwatering cuisine, your taste buds are in for a treat.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Both the summer and winter seasons are popular in Kashmir and each offers unique experiences. During the summers, activities like trekking, mountaineering and exploring the valleys and lakes is recommended. The famous Tulip Garden in Srinagar blooms in the month of April giving vibrant colours to the landscape. However, during the winters, the temperatures drop below freezing point and it becomes a winter wonderland. Skiing in Gulmarg or experiencing a scenic ride on the houseboat on the Dal Lake are some unforgettable experiences in Kashmir.

GETTING AROUND KASHMIR

When it comes to flying in and out, Srinagar is the best option but make sure you book in advance to ensure availability. Travelling within the Kashmir valleys can be challenging. You may be a skilled driver, but it is advisable to pre book a vehicle with a local driver who is familiar with the area. I strongly recommend Kashmir Car Rentals.

There are numerous checkposts along the roads in Kashmir for security reasons. Navigating these becomes time-consuming and confusing for tourists. Thus, having a local driver who is well aware about unions and permits can save you from the unnecessary hassle.

“The Perfect Kashmir Itinerary”

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN SRINAGAR AND JOURNEY TO PAHALGAM

The day begins with arrival in Srinagar city and what makes it special is the flight landing between the majestic Himalayas which is a view to die for. From there, we started our journey to Pahalgam which is a 3-hour scenic drive. The snow capped mountains and lush green meadows stretch as far as you can see. Along the way, we encountered so many cows and horses grazing in their natural habitat.

The route also passes through small Kashmiri villages which give a glimpse of local life and culture. Once you arrive in Pahalgam, the crystal clear Lidder River offers a picturesque landscape.

DAY 2 – UNVEILING PAHALGAM’S NATURAL WONDERS

Today, we decided to hop on a pony, and witness the beauty of Pahalgam in peace and serenity. We booked two horses near the Pahalgam main market, which is very expensive, but the good thing is that you can bargain a lot. Alternatively, for trekking lovers, the Pahalgam valley can be explored by foot.

Our first stop was Kanimarg – situated amidst lush greenery, is a winding trail and the scenery is nothing short of spectacular.

Next up, our horse took us to a waterfall that cascades down in the valley. We took a stop here to witness the awe of nature’s grandeur.

After the waterfall, the horse started climbing up the Kashmir or Denow Valley, it was quite adventurous, especially when you have your 2-year old child on the horse with you. It was time to hold on tight.

Then, we made our way to the Dabyan Valley. This picturesque valley is truly something out of a fairytale with green meadows nestled between snow-capped mountains. We took a long break here to eat super tasty and hot maggi noodles with a cool breeze on your face.

“Bliss at the Dabyan Valley”

Last but not the least, our final stop was the Baisaran valley, also known as “Mini-Switzerland”. It is like a dreamland surrounded by dense pine forest and the Himalayas. There are lots of fun activities like zorbing, dressing up like a local Kashmiri, Ziplining, etc.

DAY 3 – JOURNEY FROM PAHALGAM’S SERENITY TO GULMARG’S ALPINE BLISS

On Day 3, we left early in the morning from Pahalgam and started our journey to the adventurous Gulmarg. The road is a long one taking approximately 4 hours but the sights along the way makes every minute worth it. Gulmarg awaits with its alpine bliss, offering an enchanting escape from the mundane.

“Gulmarg – A scenic marvel”

Once we arrived in Gulmarg, we immediately headed to the Gulmarg Gondola. There are only limited tickets available so it is recommended to book prior. There are long queues in the summer so line up as early as possible. The Gulmarg Gondola has two phases – Gulmarg to Kongdoori and Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak. During the winter season, Kongdoori becomes a major attraction for all skiing adventures. The Apharwat peak offers stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan mountains leaving you in awe.

DAY 5 – FROM GULMARG TO SONAMARG’ ENCHANTING LANDSCAPES

On Day 5, we left Gulmarg in the morning, ready to explore the most scenic route of our Kashmir itinerary. Every twist and turn reveals a stunning vista, leaving you awestruck. Enroute, we visited a factory outlet to shop for the world famous – Pashmina Silk. It is advisable to trust your guide or driver for a good outlet as there may be a lot of non-genuine sellers as per the locals. Later, we continued our journey to the beautiful landscapes covered with snow-capped mountains to Sonamarg.

DAY 6 – EXPLORING THE PRISTINE BEAUTY OF SONAMARG AND ITS GLACIERS

Our first stop today was the Thajiwas Glacier, which is covered with snow throughout the year. We hopped on a horse to reach this glacier. On this exhilarating ride there were picturesque trails throughout with strong cold winds blowing on your face. On reaching the glacier, the first thing we had was a hot bowl of Maggi noodles – a perfect combination to warm your heart and soul amidst the snowy wonderland. Be sure to pack the warmest jackets here as weather conditions can change rapidly.

Next we headed to Zojila Pass – you need a special permit to go here. There are narrow passes and steep ascents on the route, so the journey was quite adventurous. We took a stop at Dras, before heading to the Zojila Pass.
